PKCD-280 THE PENDLE JAZZMEN"At The Village Inn" This is the second CD for P.E.K. By Blackburn's popular traditional jazz band. It was recorded at the Village Inn, Great Harwood where the band has a fortnightly residency. The band, now in its 22nd year, has a successful policy of playing happy swinging dixieland and (occasional) mainstream jazz, with a repertoire spanning the first half of the 20th century. The band line-up is Ian Royle trumpet, David Ellison clarinet and alto sax, Eddie Taylor trombone, David Knight banjo and guitar, Frank Lowe double bass and Colin Mason drums. The tunes on this CD are:- Christopher Columbus, It Had To Be You, Farewell Blues, I'm Coming Virginia, Ace In The Hole, Roses Of Picardy, Fidgety Feet, New Orleans, Ain't That A Grand And Glorious Feeling, Davenport Blues, Stumbling, A Hundred Years From Today, My Little Suede Shoes, Trouble In Mind, Buddy's Habit (73 mins)
PKCD-281 HARLEM HOT STOMPERS"Senior Moments" Here is the first CD by this excellent band, based in the North-west of England. Their last recording (a cassette I believe) was in 1998 - they should have been recorded far more frequently than they have. Don't make the mistake of confusing them with Harlem (Paul Munnery's big band); this is a seven-piece band playing the music of the classic jazz era by Jelly Roll Morton, King Oliver, Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet etc. I first saw the band at the Keswick Jazz Festival several years ago. I was very impressed, and it is a great pleasure to have recorded and produced their first CD. The band line-up is Bill Smith cornet, Tony Foulkes clarinet, soprano & alto saxes, John Ronan trombone, John Reade piano, Ian McCann banjo and guitar, Dave Parr double bass, Dave Berry drums. The tunes are:- It's Shufflin' time, Smokey Mokes, Chimes Blues, Egyptian Fantasy, Harlem Bound, Put On Your Old Gray Bonnet, Georgia Swing, Flow Gently Sweet Afton, Snag It, The Cakewalk in The Sky, Mezz's Tune, Mama's Gone Goodbye, Oriental Man, My Blue Heaven, Bogalousa Strut. (76 mins)
PKCD-282 BOB BARTON"Hot Buttered Fingers" Bob Barton is, I think, one of the most prodigiously talented pianists I have ever met. Originally from Birmingham he has lived in Switzerland for the past thirty years and has only occasionally visited England to play. Consequently neither I nor most of the other jazz fans at the Keswick Festival 2005 had even heard of him. It was at John Minnion's suggestion that I contacted Bob to see if he would like me to record his trio at Keswick - I am very glad indeed that he said yes! The trio - Bob Barton piano and vocals, Annie Hawkins double bass and Jackie Denton drums - had never played together until this session at The Queens Hotel. It is one of the delights of jazz that musicians who have never worked together before can instantly 'gel' and create musical magic. The tunes on this excellent CD are :- Caledonia, Makin' Whoopee, Red Top, Ain't Misbehavin', Gee Baby Ain't I Good To You, Choo Choo Ch' Boogie, Blue Rondo A La Turk, Ziggin' An' Zaggin',Hot Buttered Fingers, Route 66, Mean To Me, My Next Door Neighbour. (64 mins)
PKCD-283 THE OLD FASHIONED LOVE BAND"Rhythm & Romance" Here is the third CD by this distinctive and very accomplished band. There have been a couple of personnel changes since their last recording. Most notably they have been joined by Mike Turner on clarinet, soprano and alto saxes. I don't know how it's happened but until this recording session I had never even heard of him. Take my word for it he is a superb musician. The rest of the line-up is Mel Hill trumpet, Mike Pembroke trombone, Jake Reeves banjo and guitar, Harri Forelius double bass and Dave Timmis drums. As we have come to expect from OFL their choice of tunes is interesting, with several little-known and out of the ordinary numbers, and not confined to standard Traditional or New Orleans jazz standards. The tunes on this CD are:- Gatemouth, Rhythm And Romance, When You And I Were Young Maggie, Embraceable You, Algiers Strut, From Monday On, After You've Gone, Isle Of Capri, Sugar, I Wish You Love (sung in French by Mike Turner), King Of The Blues, Canal St Blues, Viper Mad, I Ain't Gonna Give Nobody None Of My Jellyroll, Once In A While. (69 mins)
PKCD-285 THE CHARLESTON CHASERS"The Clouds Will Soon Roll By" I recorded this wonderful ten-piece band at the 2005 Bude Jazz Festival. For many years the "Chasers", led by Sean Bolan, have successfully recaptured the magic of the hot dance band music of the 1920s and '30s, and it was a thrill for me to be able to capture some of that magic on CD. The band line-up is Sean Bolan cornet, Peter Rudeforth trumpet, Olly Wilby, Nick White & Robert Fowler reeds, Adrian Fry trombone, Raina Reid piano, Martin Wheatley banjo & guitar, Debbie Arthurs percussion. The tunes are:- I Would Do Anything For You, The Clouds Will Soon Roll By, When The Morning Glories, Lazybones, Spanish Stomp, East St Louis Toodle-oo, I'm Crazy 'bout My Baby, Allah's Holiday, I Get The Blues When It Rains, That's Georgia, Telling It To The Daisies, Limehouse Blues, Swamp Blues, My Baby Just Cares For Me, Stardust, Steaming South, I'll Be A Friend With Pleasure. (67 mins)
PKCD-286 MIKE LOVELL, KEITH NICHOLS & FRIENDS"Dixieland At The Thornton Little Theatre" I think the title says it all! For this live evening of dixieland jazz Mike Lovell (trombone) brought together some top musicians - Keith Nichols piano, Norman Field clarinet & saxes, Nick Ward drums, Dave Savill cornet, Louis Lince banjo and Roy Cansdale bass. They played a selection of popular jazz standards - Way Down Yonder In New Orleans, Ain't Misbehavin', I'm Crazy 'bout My Baby, St Louis Blues, I'm Gonna Sit Right Down And Write Myself A Letter, Tishomingo Blues, Struttin' With Some Barbecue, You Took Advantage Of Me, Honeysuckle Rose, Dinah, After You've Gone. There are of course several superb vocals by Keith Nichols plus four tunes by Keith, Norman and Nick (aka the Earthbound Spirits - see PKCD-237) - You're Driving Me Crazy, Chicago Southside, Dixie Cinderella, Your Feet's Too Big. (70 mins)
