In November 2005 I went, for the first time, to the Lee Bay Jazz Weekend where I recorded some fine bands, including two great sessions by Colin Kingwell's Jazz Bandits. This CD is the result. It is fifty years since Colin formed his Jazz Bandits - few band-leaders can claim that length of service to jazz! The line-up is Nigel Hunt trumpet, Ron Rumbol clarinet & alto sax, Colin Kingwell trombone, Dave Fawcett banjo, Peter Brooks double bass, Malc Murphy drums. The tunes are:- Silver Bell, Down In Jungle Town, Highways Are Happy Ways, A Porter's Love Song To A Chambermaid, The Last Mile Of The Way, One Sweet Letter From You, After The Ball, Isle Of Capri, Buddy's Habit, The Magic Isle, Laughing Samba, Smiles, Give Me Your Telephone Number, Home, Get Out Of Here And Go On Home. THE DELTA JAZZ BAND with COLIN BOWDEN featuring JIM HOLMES
"The Delta Jazz Band with Colin Bowden"
This excellent CD by one of UK's top bands was also recorded at the 2005 Lee Bay Jazz Weekend. Sonny Morris formed the Delta Jazz Band in 1990 and I had the privilege of recording them at West Lulworth in 1993 for a CD of Hymns & Sprituals (PKCD-024). Subsequently ten years later, and two years after Sonny's death, a CD of unissued live recordings, also from the band's 1993 visit to West Lulworth, was released (PKCD-232). Now 12 years after that original recording I am delighted to offer you this CD. The line-up is Jim Holmes trumpet, Terry Giles clarinet & alto sax, Roy Maskell trombone, Andy Maynard banjo, John Sirett double bass, Colin Bowden drums. They are joined by Dave Soby (piano) on three tracks. The tunes are:- Savoy Blues, Corrine Corrina, Tuck Me To Sleep In My Old Kentucky Home, Someday You'll Be Sorry, One Sweet Letter From You, If I Had My Life To Live Over, Muskrat Ramble, A Kiss To Build A Dream On, My Memphis Baby, See See Rider, Smiles, Jesus Keep Me Near The Cross, Tiger Rag. RICHARD LEACH'S 7 STARS OF JAZZ
"In Character"
Since their last CD in 2003, Richard's fine band has undergone some personnel changes, the new lineup being Gordon Whitworth trumpet, Chris Pearce reeds, Richard Leach trombone, Mike Graver piano, Brian Mellor guitar & banjo, Roger Davis double bass, Graham Smith drums. Despite the personnel changes the band's musical policy of reviving the Chicago/Dixieland sounds of the Alex Welsh bands of the 1950s to '70s is unchanged. Like their first two CDs this was recorded live at Stourbridge RFC Jazz Club (April 2006). The tunes are: Royal Garden Blues, Sugar, My Gal Sal, Good Queen Bess, Just One More Chance, The Blues My Naughty Sweetie Gave To Me, Rosetta, Just Squeeze Me, Dapper Dan, I'm In The Market For You, Flamingo, Sleepy Time Gal, Original Dixieland One-Step, Old Rockin' Chair, Chinatown My Chinatown. THE UNITY STOMPERS JAZZ BAND
"Swing That Music"
This popular Traditional Jazz Band, based on the Isle of Wight, has been entertaining audiences since 1960 and this is their fourth CD for P.E.K., recorded in March 2006. The line-up is unchanged since their last CD (PKCD-254), and the tunes are: Everybody Loves My Baby, St Louis Blues, Swing That Music, Won't You Come Home Bill Bailey, On A Slow Boat To China, Sweet Sue, My Bucket's Got A Hole In It, Isle Of Capri, I Can't Give You Anything But Love, I'm Gonna Sit Right Down And Write Myself A Letter, Poor Butterfly, Blue Riffs Of Dover, My Blue Heaven, Once In A While, Nobody's Sweetheart. MARTIN BENNETT'S OLD GREEN RIVER BAND
"Rocking My Baby"
This is another exciting band to have undergone several personnel changes in recent months, but without any loss of its distinctive sound. Some bands are instantly recognisable and this is one of them. The new line-up is Dave Clennell trumpet, Howard Murray reeds, John Finch trombone, Martin Bennett piano & vocals, Mac Mac Donald banjo, Jim Swinnerton double bass, Stuart Smith drums. Jim and Stuart are still in their 20s; it's good to see young musicians playing this sort of jazz. The tunes on this live recording are: Lord Lord Lord, Make Me A Pallett On Your Floor, At The Jazz Band Ball, Rocking My Baby, I Can't Believe That You're In Love With Me, Maria Elena, The Old Green River, When We Danced At The Mardi Gras, You've Got Me Tremblin', Saratoga Swing, Tuck Me To Sleep In My Old Kentucky Home, The Eyes Of Texas Are Upon You. KEITH NICHOLS' COLLEGIANS
"Collegiate Rhythm"
I recorded this superb CD at the 2004 Bude Jazz Festival where Keith's Collegians, his recently formed seven-piece band, played a programme entitled "The Music Of Bix Beiderbecke". For this session they were joined, for some tunes, by Mike Piggott on violin. The Collegians (in which Keith plays trombone) rely less on written arrangements than his other 7-piece band The Little Devils. The band line-up is Andy Woon trumpet, Norman Field reeds, Keith Nichols trombone, Nick Gill piano, Spats Langham guitar & banjo, Colin Turner tuba & bass sax, Nick Ward drums. Mike Piggott joins the band on violin on five tracks. The tunes are: Do Something, Sugar, Bouncing Around, Blue Room, Sweet Sue, Two Deuces, You're Driving Me Crazy, April Kisses, Vo Do Do De O Blues, Please, Louisiana, Singing The Blues, Exactly Like You, Back In Your Own Backyard, Happy Feet.
