"Catalogue - Autumn 2009"
Ref: Band / Artist: Album Title: Notes:
PKCD-306 PAUL MUNNERY'S SWING STREET"Stumbling Into Paradise" Here is the first CD by Paul Munnery's superb small band. Recorded live at the 2006 Bude Jazz Festival, the band line-up is John Shillito trumpet; Robert Fowler clarinet & ten sax; Paul Munnery trombone; Nick Gill piano; Rachel Hayward guitar; Tony Sharp bass; Dion Cochrane drums. They play the sort of jazz you might have heard 'after-hours' in a jazz club on 52nd Street, New York in the 1930s. The session was very well received by an enthusiastic audience which, and this is always a good sign, included several off-duty musicians. The tunes are:- Joe Louis Stomp, I Wished On The Moon, Somebody Loves Me, Strike Up The Band, For All We Know, You, Snowy Morning Blues, All My Life, In The Middle Of A Kiss, If Dreams Come True. (65 mins).
PKCD-307 RICHARD LEACH'S 7 STARS OF JAZZ"Chicago Echoes" It is less than a year since the last CD by Richard's exciting Chicago-style band which models itself on the great Alex Welsh band of the 1950s and '60s. At present the trumpet chair in the band is shared between Gordon Whitworth, who appeared on the previous CD, and Allen Beechey who plays on this CD; Richard wanted to have recent recordings available featuring both Gordon and Allen. It was recorded live in November 2006 and, as with all the band's previous CDs, it was live at Stourbridge RFC Jazz Club. The line-up is Allen Beechey trumpet; Chris Pearce clarinet alto & soprano saxes; Richard Leach trombone; Mike Graver piano; Brian Mellor guitar & banjo; Roger Davis bass; Graham Smith drums. The tunes are:- China Boy, You Took Advantage Of Me, Monday Date, New Orleans, Dippermouth Blues, Jazz Me Blues, A Ghost Of A Chance, Girl Of My Dreams, Mandy Make Up Your Mind, Just Relax, Fidgety Feet, Crying My Heart Out For You, Home, Christopher Columbus. (79 mins).
PKCD-308 THE ANTIQUE JAZZBAND"Cherished" Here is another super CD by this marvellous band whose popularity is well deserved. It was recorded over two days early in January 2007 (not live sessions) and the band are on fine form. The line-up is the same as their previous CD (PKCD-288 'Renovated') namely Chris Mercer trumpet; Chris Pearce clarinet & saxes; Richard Leach trombone; Clinton Sedgley banjo; Andy Robins double bass; Graham Smith drums. The tunes are:- Down In Honky Tonk Town, Ol' Miss Rag, Flat Foot, Aunt Hagar's Blues, Memphis Shake, High Society, Ain't Misbehavin', Keyhole Blues, Button Up Your Overcoat, Melancholy Blues, Ostrich Walk, Sweet Substitute, South, When The Midnight Choo Choo Leaves For Alabam', Last Mile Blues, Bei Mir Bis Du Schon. As you can see from the list of tunes this is not a band to be pigeon-holed into any particular jazz style. Good for them I say! (74 min).
PKCD-309 THE JOHN MADDOCKS JAZZMEN"Behind Closed Doors" As the title suggests this is another CD recorded without an audience. It is the eighth CD by the band on the P.E.K. Sound label; five of the previous albums were live recordings. In many respects I think this is their best CD; it contains a marvellously varied selection of tunes and there are several variations of line-up from the full 7-piece band on most tracks to a beautiful trio version of Help Me Make It Through The Night. The other tunes are:- Happy Feet Blues, Smiling The Blues Away, Red Man Blues, Mood Indigo, Sweet Fields, I'd Love It, Lovin' Mama Blues, Little Lawrence, When Your Hair Has Turned To Silver, Chimes Blues, Flow Gently Sweet Afton, Georgia On My Mind, Too Busy. The line-up, slightly changed from their last CD, is Peter Wilkinson trumpet; John Maddocks clarinet & alto sax; Tony Farr trombone; Peter Tamplin piano; Keith Dorey guitar & banjo; Stuart Gledhill double bass; Brian Barker drums. (64 mins).
PKCD-310 DAVE BRENNAN'S JUBILEE JAZZ BAND"Jubilee 45" It's about eight years since there was a new CD by Dave Brennan's superb band, and in all that time there has been only one change of personnel brought about by the retirement, due to ill health, of Dave Vickers. The current line-up is - Dave Pogson trumpet; Brian Kenny clarinet & tenor sax; Mike Taylor trombone; Pete Beaumont piano; Dave Brennan banjo; Mick Kennedy double bass; Terry Kennedy drums. This CD has, for various reasons, been a long time in production; it was recorded (not live) in late 2004 and early 2005 but I hope, like me, you'll agree it was worth the wait. The 15 tunes are:- Once In A While, Beautiful Ohio, The Martinique, Moonglow, Memphis Blues, The Mooche, It Ain't My Fault, Hilarity Rag, All By Myself, Rent Party Blues, Froggie Moore, Melancholy Blues, Jubilee 45, That Old Feeling, Don't Give Up The Ship - and the playing time is a generous (78 mins).
PKCD-311 HOKUM"We're Wondering Who" In contrast to the three previous CDs in this list here is a new dose of musical mayhem from Hokum. Those of you who have seen the band will know theirs is a very visual show. Nevertheless much of their humour comes across in this recording, and musically they are a highly accomplished band. With this line-up it's no more than you would expect - Megs Etherington cornet & vocals; Norman Field and Jim Chambers reeds; Chris Lowe trombone; Malcolm Hogarth piano; 'Spats' Langham banjo; Steve Davis sousaphone; Nick Ward percussion. The tunes on this CD, recorded live at the 2006 Bude Jazz Festival, are:- I'm Wonderin' Who, Sidewalk Blues, Moanin' For You, Crazy Rhythm, Ukulele Lady, Bouncing Around, My Monday Date, Please, Ol' Man River, Miss Hannah, Miranda, There's A Trick In Pickin' A Chick Chick Chicken, Like Little Bo Peep I Want To Count Sheep Until The Cows Come Home, OK Baby. (64 min).
