"Catalogue - Autumn 2009"
Ref: Band / Artist: Album Title: Notes:
PKCD-175 SARAH SPENCER SINGS THE BLUES"Every Married Woman's Got A Back Door Man" Until comparitively recently Sarah Spencer's talents as a blues singer were largely unknown. This is remedied on this CD in which she plays a little tenor sax and sings on all 16 tracks. She is accompanied by Derek Winters tpt, Roger Browne pno, and John Johnson bs. The tunes include Freight Train Blues, Separation Blues, Hot Nuts, Fore Day Rider, Percolatin' Blues, Don't You Feel My Leg, How Long Blues, Yonder Come The Blues. (58mins)
PKCD-177 DAVE MOORWOOD'S RASCALS OF RHYTHM with Digby Fairweather and Jim Fryer"Hors d'Oeuvres & Other Tasty Morsels" This CD by Dave Moorwood's band contains 15 tracks of pure musical delight. The band line-up is the same as PKCD-144 but with guests Digby Fairweather (cornet) and Jim Fryer (trombone and occasional tuba). Once again this small band produces a huge variety of sounds, due to the multi-instrumental talents of Mike Wills and Tony Isaacs, and also the presence on most tracks of one or both of their hugely talented guests. (71 mins)
PKCD-182 ROGER WELLS' NEW ORLEANS HOT SHOTS"Breeze-ing Along" This CD by Roger Wells' band, in my opinion, places them firmly among the top handful of New Orleans-style bands in Britain today. They achieve a superb balance between ensemble playing and carefully placed solos; Steve Graham's trumpet playing is both sensitive and thoughtful, and at times as hot as any you'll hear; and the rhythm section has a lightness which lifts every tune. 13 tracks - (67 mins)
PKCD-183 THE HUGH RAINEY JAZZ BAND with Lyn Falvey"On The Way Up" Here, for the third time on P.E.K. Sound, Hugh Rainey shows the talent and versatility of his fine band. The line-up is the same as his previous CDs with vocals by Lyn Falvey on 6 of the 21 tracks:- Forty And Tight, I'll Catch The Sun, Limehouse Blues, The Gypsy, Moulin A Cafe, Amazing Grace, On The Way Up. (76 mins)
PKCD-184 JIM SHELLEY'S FRISCO JAZZ BAND with George Huxley"Let Me Call You Sweetheart" This CD was recorded live at the 2001 Keswick Festival. George Huxley (sop sax) joins the band for four tracks - the five piece front line has to be heard to be believed! The line-up is Dennis Armstrong & Chris Mercer cornets, Brian 'Watty' Wathen cl, Tony Hobson tb, Jon Penn pno, Jim Shelley bjo, Jim Wood tuba, Mike Haslum dms. The 17 tunes include:- Smokey Mokes, New Orleans Stomp, South, Riverside Blues, Wild Cat Blues. (73 mins)
PKCD-185 THE JOHN MADDOCKS JAZZMEN"Two In One" This excellent CD was recorded live at the 2001 Bude Festival. The line-up, unchanged for several years, is the same as their last two CDs. The band has a wonderfully interesting and rewarding repertoire; just look at the list of tunes - The Girls Go Crazy 'bout The Way I Walk, Rhythm King, Black Cat On The Fence, Frog-I-More Rag, St Louis Blues, Stevedore Stomp, The Dormouse, Petite Fleur, Harlem Bound, Papa De Da Da, Moose March, Royal Garden Blues, Flow Gently Sweet Afton. (72 mins)
