| PKCD-190 | HARLEM | "Renaissance" | I am thrilled to present this CD from Paul Munnery's superb 1920s/30s big band - recorded in October 2001. It is an amazing accomplishment by Paul to have kept an 11 piece orchestra together for more than 20 years, though there have been personnel changes of course. The format of the band with 3 trumpets, trombone, 3 reeds, piano, banjo, bass and drums remains constant, as does the source of their musical inspiration - Ellington, Henderson, Luis Russell etc - and the wonderfully exciting sound they produce. But, because they don't have drums and they do have two saxes and a guitar, some jazz fans (without even hearing them) decide it's not their 'cup of tea'. This is a great pity; it really is a superb CD of top quality happy jazz. The line-up is Mike Wills and Tony Isaacs cl & saxes, Perry Lock pno, Dave Moorwood gtr & bjo, Geoff Hull bs.
