PKCD-226 MADDOCKS-HUXLEY REEDS UNITED"Top of the League" Here is the first CD on P.E.K. by this formidable musical partnership. George Huxley and John Maddocks are without doubt among the top handful of clarinet players in the country and, when they joined forces at the 2002 Bude Jazz Festival, the result, as you can hear, was sensational. The rest of the band is Simon Banks piano, Geoff Over banjo, Stuart Gledhill bass and Barry Norman drums. The tunes are:- Swing That Music, Mood Indigo, Isle Of Capri, As Tu Le Cafard, Creole Song, I Found A New Baby, Lonesome Blues, Hiawatha Rag, Trog's Blues, Weary Blues, Sleepy Time Gal. (75 mins)
PKCD-227 JOHN MADDOCKS TRIO & DOWN HOME JAZZERS"Down Home Jazzin" This CD is a reissue of some of the great tracks by John's Trio and Down Home Jazzers which I recorded at the Bude Festivals of 1995, 1996 & 1997. They were originally released on cassette only and have for a long while been unobtainable. Some of you will remember those exciting sessions at the Falcon Hotel which would start with the trio of John, Peter Tamplin (pno) and Chris Marchant (dms), and then add Mike Cox (bjo), Alan Potton (cornet) and then other guests would join the band. The tunes are :- (from 1995) Pinetop's Boogie Woogie, Precious Lord Take My Hand; (from 1996) Papa De Da Da, Yearning, Love Songs Of The Nile, Indian Love Call; (from 1997) San Jacinto Stomp, Wolverine Blues, Ace In The Hole, You Broke Your Promise, Into Each Life Some Rain Must Fall, Just A Little While To Stay Here. (74 mins)
PKCD-232 SONNY MORRIS & THE DELTA JAZZ BAND"You Can't Escape From Me" In November 1993 I recorded this wonderful New Orleans-style band for a CD of Hymns & Spirituals (PKCD-024 "Gloryland"). That weekend the band played two live sessions in West Lulworth, both of which I also recorded, but not with a view to releasing any of the material. In 2003 John Sirett approached me to discuss the possibility of producing a CD from those two sessions. And this is it. I think this band, formed by Sonny and Ben Marshall in 1989, should be regarded as one of a handful of truly great British New Orleans-style bands. Hearing these tracks again after so many years certainly brought back many happy memories for me, and reminded me what a great loss it was when Sonny died in February 2001. The line-up is Sonny Morris tpt, Terry Giles cl, Bob Ward tb, Ben Marshall bjo, John Sirett bs, Colin Bowden dms. The tunes include:- You Can't Escape From Me, Ice Cream, Dauphin St Blues, Exactly Like You, You Tell Me Your Dream, Over The Waves, See See Rider, Red Wing, When My Dreamboat Comes Home, A Miner's Dream Of Home (voc. Sonny), Clarinet Marmalade. (74 mins).
PKCD-234 JOHN DUNMORE'S NEW ORLEANS JAZZ BAND"Uptown Bumps" It's seven years since I last listed a recording by John's New Orleans Band in my catalogue. This CD was recorded live in July 2003 in front of an enthusiastic audience. The line-up is Ken Pye tpt, John Dunmore cl & saxes, Ron Radford tb, Barry Grummett pno, Rachel Hayward bjo, Harry Slater bs and Paul Spedding dms. The tunes are:- Chinatown My Chinatown, Algiers Strut, Just A Closer Walk With Thee, If I Didn't Care, Smile Darn Ya Smile, I'm Glad For Your Sake, Uptown Bumps, Into Each Life Some Rain Must Fall, Rose Room, Thank You Mister Moon, When We Danced At The Mardi Gras, Sleepy Time Gal, After The Ball. (72 mins)
PKCD-236 SPICY ADVICE RAGTIME BAND"CHAMPAGNE" This excellent New Orleans-style band from Sweden caused quite a sensation when they appeared at the 2003 Bude Jazz Festival. It is an eight-piece band of young musicians (the oldest being about 32 years old) whose approach to New Orleans jazz is very fresh and exciting. The line-up is trumpet, trombone, clarinet, clarinet/tenor sax, piano, banjo, bass, drums. They are firmly rooted in the music George Lewis and Bunk Johnson but their repertoire includes some ragtime pieces which we almost never hear, and they have also sought out the verses to many New Orleans standard tunes. This CD comes from two of their Bude Festival sessions and the tunes include:- Creole Belles, Smiles, Champagne Rag, Heebie Jeebies, Tie Me To Your Apron Strings Again, St Philip Street Breakdown, Each Day, At A Georgia Camp Meeting, My Special Friend Is Back In Town, Peacherine Rag, Lou-easy-an-ia, In The Sweet Bye And Bye, Aggravatin' Papa, When My Dreamboat Comes Home. (63min)
PKCD-237 KEITH NICHOLS' EARTHBOUND SPIRITS"Harlem Madness" This is the long-awaited CD by Keith Nichols' Trio, recorded at the 2003 Keswick Festival. The trio, Keith Nichols piano and vocals, Norman Field clarinet & alto sax, and Nick Ward drums, played a superb session - two hours of concentrated high quality jazz and great fun. The tunes are:- Doin' The New Low Down, I Can't Give You Anything But Love, Diga Diga Do, Sugar, Sugar (a different one), Ching A Ling's Jazz Bazaar, Jelly Roll Morton Style, Wolverine Blues, If I Could Be With You One Hour Tonight, Blues My Naughty Sweetie Gave To Me, Washboard Blues, My Melancholy Baby, Mandy Make Up Your Mind, Southside Blues, When It's Sleepy Time Down South, Sweet Savannah Sue, Soothin' Syrup Stomp, I'm More Than Satisfied, The Joint Is Jumpin'. (67min)
