PKCD-239 BRIAN CARRICK'S HERITAGE HALL STOMPERS WITH RAY FOXLEY"When Your Hair Has Turned To Silver" It's over five years since there was a new CD by Brian's Heritage Hall Stompers and there has never been one with Ray Foxley and Brian together. This was recorded at the 2001 Bude Festival and, subsequently, in 2002, whilst Brian and I were discussing details of its release, Ray sadly died and so the project was shelved. In 2003 we approached Ray's family to get their reaction to the prospect of the CD being released and they were very supportive. I think it's a fitting tribute to a much-loved and greatly missed jazz musician. The band line-up is Peter Wright tpt, Brian Carrick cl, Norman Thatcher tb, Ray Foxley pno, Sarah Thatcher bjo, Howard Worthington bs, Taff Lloyd dms. The tunes:- Girl Of My Dreams, The Love Nest, Running Wild, Dinah, New Orleans Hula, When Your Hair Has Turned To Silver, Nobody Knows The Way I Feel This Morning, The Old Rugged Cross, The Last Mile Of The Way, Pretty Baby, Sunshine In The Shadows, Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone (73 mins)
PKCD-240 SARAH SPENCER"Confessin' The Blues" On the evidence of this CD Sarah has to be regarded as one of the very best present-day Blues singers in the tradition of the great black singers of the 1920s. I don't think I've ever heard such powerful, poignant and moving Blues singing, (except on early recordings by the original black Blues singers) - and remember Sarah is a young white girl from London! She is accompanied by Roger Browne piano and Tony Sharp double bass. They are joined on four tracks by Derek Winters (trumpet) and on five by Steve Graham (trumpet). Sarah plays tenor sax on seven tracks. The tunes are:- Any-Kind-A-Man, Don't Fool Around On Me, Confessin' The Blues, Far Away Blues, Ol' Sam Tages, You Can't Tell The Difference After Dark, Stavin' Chain (That Rockin' Swing), Blues At Sunrise, For Sale (Hannah Johnson's Big Jack Ass), You Stole My Cherry, The Lord Will Make A Way, I Want A Two-fisted Double Jointed Man, Lead Pencil Blues, I'm A Sales Lady, My Brand-New Papa, Down In The Mouf Blues, Stavin' Chain, Make Me A Pallet On The Floor, May The Bird Of Paradise Fly Up Your Nose. (74mins)
PKCD-241 MARTIN BENNETT'S OLD GREEN RIVER BAND"One For My Baby" I think it's one of the most exciting bands I've heard in ages; their music could be described as 'New Orleans meets R'n'B'. It is quite different from any of the 'run-of-the-mill' New Orleans-style bands; and I think few bands come closer to the true spirit of New Orleans in their music. This CD was recorded live at a thrilling session near Macclesfield in December 2003. The line-up (slightly changed since their last CD) is Stan Williams tpt, Tony Denton bar sax, Eric Brierley tb, Martin Bennett pno, Louis Lince bjo, Jim Swinnerton bs, Pete Cotterill dms and the tunes are:- Indiana, You Are My Sunshine, Tin Roof Blues, All Of Me, The Tennessee Waltz, Algiers Strut, Wabash Blues, Baby Face, Saint James' Infirmary, Some Of These Days, See See Rider, Bye And Bye. (75mins)
PKCD-243 RICHARD LEACH'S 7 STARS OF JAZZ"Bordering On The Welsh" One of the more neglected areas of jazz today is the Chicago/Dixieland style of music played so brilliantly in the 1950s to 1970s by the legendary Alex Welsh Band. In 2003 Richard Leach assembled a band to play just this style of jazz - the other band members are John Burnett trumpet, Rod Chambers reeds, Mike Graver piano, Brian Mellor guitar, Len Thwaites bass and Brian Price drums - truly a Midlands all-star line-up. This CD was recorded live just before Christmas 2003 and the tunes are:- S'wonderful, Sweeping The Blues Away, That's A Plenty, Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams, Willow Weep For Me, I've Got A Feeling I'm Falling, Out Of Nowhere, I Want A Little Girl, As Long As I Live, Sweet Lorraine, Once In A While, Georgia On My Mind, Oh Baby. (73mins)
PKCD-244 PHIL WALL'S JAZZ CARDINALS"Every Tub" Hearing and recording this band at last year's Bude Festival was, for me, one of the highlights of the Festival. Looking at the line-up from the programme I was, initially, a bit suspicious, having never heard a band with banjo and guitar. But the session was a delight, and so, I think, is their first CD. The line-up is Norman Thatcher cornet; Phil Wall clarinet & alto sax; Rob Gribble baritone and tenor saxes, trombone, vocals; Sam Sims guitar, mandolin; Sarah Thatcher banjo, guitar; Vic Partridge double bass; Tony Quinn percussion. The tunes are:- Gatemouth, Old Fashioned Love, Stock Yards Strut, Blue Hawaii, The Owls Hoot, After You've Gone, Give Me Your Telephone Number, The Tennessee Waltz, Perdido St Blues, Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone, Every Tub, Goober Dance, Forty And Tight, Forevermore, Papa Dip, Riverside Blues, Piggly Wiggly. (73 mins)
PKCD-246 THE RAE BROTHERS NEW ORLEANS JAZZ BAND"In The Good Old Summer Time" At the 2003 Bude Jazz Festival, where this, the band's seventh, CD was recorded, they were rejoined by Ian Brown on cornet. Ian played with the band from 1995 to 1998 and was on their first CD (PKCD-097). Fans of the band will know what to expect - relaxed ensemble New Orleans-style music played with great sympathy and understanding. As Marcel Joly says in the sleeve-note, "They give a new dimension to the idea that less can be more. Their playing is simple relaxed and heartfelt." The line-up is Ian Brown cornet; Mac Rae clarinet; Jim Blenkin trombone; Dave Rae banjo; John Robinson double bass; Kenny Milne drums, and the tunes are:- We'll Stroll The Lanes Together, You Belong To Me, The Miner's Dream Of Home, Postman's Lament, If Those Lips Could Only Speak, In The Good Old Summer Time, Midnight Hour Blues, Gypsy Love Song, All I Do Is Dream Of You, What A Friend We Have In Jesus, The Second Line, South, You Broke Your Promise, Sweetheart Of All My Dreams, Running Wild, Home Sweet Home. (66 mins)
