PKCD-247 CHICAGO TEDDYBEARS SOCIETY JAZZ BAND"Bear Essentials" The Chicago Teddybears is one of Britain's longest established and most accomplished and popular Traditional Jazz Bands. Based in the north-west of England they have a huge following both at home and in many parts of Europe. The line-up has remained largely unchanged for many years, though this is the first recording with Dave Mott, their new reed player. The other band members are:- Ken Doran trumpet; Tony Dunleavy trombone; Neville Goodwin piano; Tony Ormesher banjo, guitar; Rae Owens double bass; Brian Singleton drums. The tunes are:- Ce M'sieur Qui Parle, Oh Baby, When You're Smiling, The Dormouse, St Philip St Breakdown, Rent Party Blues, Jambalaya On The Bayou, Take The 'A' Train, Give Me Your Telephone Number, Shout 'em Aunt Tilly, Hindustan, My Buddy, It Don't Mean A Thing, Shine, Sultry Serenade, Gee Baby Ain't I Good To You, When You Wore A Tulip, Twelfth St Rag. Recorded in March 2004. (72 mins)
PKCD-248 THE JOHN MADDOCKS TRIO"Collecting Glasses" The John Maddocks Trio have appeared at the Bude Festival for many years, and, as has often happened in the past, on this session at the 2003 Festival, they were four in number (!) - John Maddocks clarinet, alto sax; Peter Tamplin piano; Mike Cox banjo; Chris Marchant drums. John's Down Home Jazzers (PKCD-227) grew out of his ever expanding Trio about nine or ten years ago. With John you might not know how many you'll get, but you can always be sure of some thrilling jazz. The tunes are:- Buddy's Habit, Potato Head Blues, The Old Rugged Cross, Move The Body Over, High Society, Midnight Hour Blues, Kansas City Stomps, Snake Rag, Love Me Tender, Good Morning Blues, Perdido St Blues, Doctor Jazz. For an explanation of the CD title you'll have to buy it and read the sleeve-notes. (65 mins)
PKCD-250 THE WABASH JAZZMEN"On A Coconut Island" This is the eighth recording by Mark Challinor's outstanding five-piece band - five of the other seven are still available on CD - and, like their last CD, it was recorded (in April 2004) under studio conditions. The line-up is unchanged - Ged Hone cornet; Mike Hayler clarinet, tenor sax; Mike Pembroke trombone; Mark Challinor banjo; Howard Worthington double bass. The two-piece drummer-less rhythm section is one of the best anywhere, and the excitement generated by the supremely able front-line is undoubtedly a major factor in the band's popularity. The tunes are:- The Old Spinning Wheel In The Parlour, Smile Darn Ya Smile, You've Gotta See Mama Every Night, On A Coconut Island, Way Down Upon The Swanee River, Wabash Blues, Bluebells Goodbye, St Louis Blues, Wait Till The Sun Shines Nellie, Creole Song, Blue Turning Grey Over You, Said I Wasn't Gonna Tell Nobody, Africa Blues, One Sweet Letter From You, Louisian I Ay. (70 mins)
PKCD-251 TULANE NEW ORLEANS MUSIC"True" Hearing this recording again after an interval of nearly ten years reminded me what a truly great New Orleans-style band this was, and, despite some shortcomings in the recording, (it was ten years ago after all!) I am very pleased to have Pete Child's approval to re-issue this album. The line-up is Nigel Hunt trumpet; Hugh Roberts clarinet, tenor sax; Pete Child trombone; Geof Roberts piano; Bill Scott banjo; Roger White double bass; Roger Wells drums. Sadly the band folded only a year or two after this recording, though several band members will be familiar to many of you. The tunes are:- Shake It And Break It, When Your Hair Has Turned To Silver, Love Songs Of The Nile, Don't Sweetheart Me, Cradle Song, True, Don't Go Away Nobody, June Night, I Love You So Much It Hurts, Jambalaya On The Bayou, On Higher Ground, Bluebells Goodbye, Someday Sweetheart, I'll See You In My Dreams. (69 mins) This CD is a reissue of PKC-029 from 1994.
PKCD-256 THE SECOND LINE JAZZ BAND"Live at the 2004 Keswick Jazz Festival" Here is the first CD for P.E.K. by another of Sweden's excellent traditional jazz bands. In recent years bands from Sweden have been making quite an impact at festivals in England, and deservedly so. This band is comprised of predominantly young musicians, all highly accomplished - Niklas Carlsson tb & vocals, Jesper Albrektsson tpt & vocals, Olof Skoog saxes & vocals, Anders Wasen bjo, Per Bach bs, Anders Ostlund dms. This CD comes from two of their exciting sessions at the 2004 Keswick Festival, where their brand of hot traditional/dixieland jazz was very well received. The tunes are:- I'm Putting All My Eggs In One Basket, Oh Marie, Creole Love Call, Goodnight Irene, Oh Lady Be Good, Where He Leads Me, Sweet Georgia Brown, Let Me Call You Sweetheart, I Want A Little Girl, Mabel's Dream, The Happy Wanderer, I'll Fly Away. (70 mins)
PKCD-257 THE JOHN MADDOCKS JAZZMEN"Lucky For Some" A new CD from the John Maddocks band is always a welcome treat and this one, recorded in June 2004 is especially exciting. John's band has gone through some personnel changes in recent times, with the retirement of Alan Potton and Brian Stockley from the band, and the partial retirement of Tony Farr. John seems to have struck gold in his replacement for Alan Potton. Peter Wilkinson is a fine musician with a lovely tone who has slotted effortlessly into the trumpet chair. Sid Bailey and Tony Farr now share the trombone duties, while Brian Barker's drumming ensures the rhythm section maintains its traditionally high standard. The other band members are as on their previous CDs. Recorded (not live) in June 2004 this new CD has 13 tracks, four of which are original tunes written by band members and recorded here for the very first time:- Dans Les Rues d'Antibes, Hymn To Her, Cry Baby Cry, Guess You Were Right All Along, Crescent Strut, Fair And Square In Love, Good Morning Blues, Black And Blue, The Second Line, Novelty Bounce, Big Lip Blues, Hiawatha Rag. (70 mins)
