2007 BUDE FESTIVAL
This year’s festival was very different for me for two reasons; firstly Ann was with me for the first time and secondly, as I have so many recordings in the pipeline or booked to be recorded, I decided not to do any recordings at Bude - another first. Ann survived the Friday evening with the Kingwell Mafia extremely well, in fact she said she enjoyed it ! Strange girl!

I must say we enjoyed the whole festival very much; so nice not to be constantly dashing from venue to venue to set up, record and strip out again. An added bonus was that we had time for some good meals; Samphire’s Restaurant (where the old Burn Court Hotel used to be) gets our highest recommendation - superb food and faultless service.

Once again the musical highlight for me was Dennis Armstrong’s Oliver Band at The Falcon Hotel - what a thrilling session! Of course being free to “stroll” meant I saw many more bands than usual. Some of the more memorable bands were Roger Wells’ N.O. Hotshots, Black Snake JB, Colin Kingwell’s Jazz Bandits, West Jesmond Rhythm Kings, Keith Nichols’ Collegians, Brian Carrick’s Algiers Stompers, Harlem, The New Delta Jazz Band and several more. We had to return home on Friday so we missed the last day which featured a couple of my favourites - never mind, it was a great week. As a bonus this year the weather was excellent with lots of warm sunshine.

LOOKING AHEAD
Several exciting CDs are in production for release in the coming months:- first will be John Hallam with The Tony Oreshko Trio (2007 Keswick Festival) and Steve Graham’s Classic Jazz (also Keswick 2007). The recording I made in July of Mellow Avstreih with Paul  Munnery’s Swing Street contains some wonderful jazz; I’m looking forward to working on that one. Recent recordings of Peter Carlton’s Jazz Friends and The Hugh Rainey Jazz Band show great promise. In the next couple of months or so I am booked to record Excelsior Vintage Jazz Band, Sarah Spencer’s Band, Brian Carrick’s Algiers Stompers and The Big Bear Stompers. I don’t yet have a recording date for The Rae Brothers N.O. Jazz Band - it’s likely to be around the end of the year. So lots of good things in store!

LOOKING FURTHER AHEAD
I plan a further reduction in my CD output, this time to three new releases per quarter. The aim is to make more time to have fun!  I feel that, now I am 65, perhaps I shouldn’t be working full time any more, and Ann and I have so many things to do and so many places to see.

This does not mean the beginning of the end of P.E.K. Sound - but just that I am trying to achieve a balance between work (which I enjoy enormously) and pleasure. The reduction to three CDs per quarter will take place in the New Year. I intend to have the December Newsletter out in good time for you to buy your Christmas CDs.

In the meantime enjoy your jazz, live if possible or on CD from P.E.K. Sound.
