SPRING TREATS - THREE SUPERB NEW ORLEANS-STYLE CDs FOR YOUR ENJOYMENT
PKCD-321 Excelsior Vintage Jazz Band "Our Monday Date" This is the first recording from Ron Rumbol's excellent and highly danceable band for over five years. PKCD-322 The Rae Brothers New Orleans Jazz Band "Live at Newbold Verdon Jazz Club" Ian Wynne, a young and very talented piano player, has joined the band since their last CD in 2005. PKCD-323 Sarah Spencer's Transatlanic Band "Whenever You're Lonesome" This great band made a short tour of England last Autumn. I was very fortunate to be able to capture one of their sessions.

CARE OF CDs
I know I've written about this before, but it bears repeating - CDs are not indestructible! They need as much care when being handled as did our much loved LPs of yesteryear. From time to time customers contact me because they have a problem with one of their P.E.K. CDs. Incidentally I will always replace faulty CDs - no quibbles. However, so often when the "faulty" CD is returned to me, I find it has been physically damaged (a CD has no chance of playing if great chunks of the playing surface are missing) or it is covered in blobs of some sticky substance (usually marmalade I believe). Obviously here I am exaggerating somewhat in order to make the point.
Remember the top surface of a CD is very delicate. On top of the plastic disc there is just a microscopic metallic film covered by clear lacquer, and if the metallic film is damaged in any way the CD will probably not play beyond the point of the damage.
The data on a CD is read by a laser beam scanning the underside of the disc and if the underside is dirty (finger marks, or marmalade) it is likely to affect the playing.
So please, when CDs are not being played, keep them safe in their jewel case; only ever handle a CD by the edge and, if you have difficulty playing a disc, try cleaning it.
To clean a CD use a moistened tissue and wipe gently across the underside of the disc (side to side, not round in circles), then dry carefully with another clean tissue.
I still have a stock of CD cleaning wipes which I can supply free when you order CDs; if you'd like a few just ask.

HOLIDAYS
Ann and I will be on holiday in early March; I hope to send out this Newsletter before we go away, but please don't telephone your CD orders before March 17th - you'll only get the answer phone. I'll process your mail orders starting on March 17th. Top of Page |
EXPANDING CATALOUE
You might have noticed that your new catalogue has grown to 28 pages. I have struggled for ages to keep it down to 24 pages but I've now lost the battle. I was reluctant to delete more CDs - too many good ones and I want to list them all - and I did not want to shorten the descriptive notes, so the extra pages had to go in. It puts my print costs up so I hope you'll buy extra CDs! Top of Page |
LOOKING AHEAD
The recordings of The Silver Leaf Jazz Band, The Big Bear Stompers and The Antique Six Jazzband all went very well indeed. The Big Bears session at Lains Barn in December was an absolute joy. There was a huge amount of excellent jazz to be sifted through, but Dave Moorwood has made his selection and production is underway. The Antique Six recording was spread over two days and again the problem will be deciding which good tracks will have to be rejected in favour of even better ones! Tracks have also been selected for the Silver Leaf Jazz Band's CD. Three excellent CDs to look forward to later in the year. There's a good chance that all three will be complete in time for the June Newsletter.
I am keen to start work soon on some of the Brian Carrick recordings which are currently waiting patiently on the shelf. It's high time there was a new CD by Brian on P.E.K. Sound.
I am booked to record Richard Leach's 7 Stars Of Jazz in April and The Ken Colyer Legacy New Orleans Jazz Band in May.
At the Keswick Festival I am booked to record Martin Bennett's Old Green River Band and one or two others perhaps. I expect to record some bands at Bude this year, possibly including Maddocks/Huxley Reeds United - watch this space! Top of Page |
