LOOKING AHEAD
Over the coming months I will be releasing a number of superb CDs. In particular (but in no particular order) there will, in 2009, be new CDs by The Ken Colyer Legacy New Orleans Jazz Band, The Phil Brown Swingtet, Maddocks Huxley Reeds United, Amy Roberts’ Band, Brian Carrick’s Algiers Stompers with Shirley Alexander and Dennis Armstrong’s Oliver Band.
Recent recording sessions have all gone very well. In early October Ann and I went to Dundee to record The Storyville Allstars with Yvonne Robb and Fionna Duncan. Yvonne’s name is probably unfamiliar to most of you; she sang with Alyn Ainsworth’s dance band in the 1960s I believe, and, at the age of 82, she has a remarkably attractive and powerful voice. Fionna Duncan was, of course, with The Clyde Valley Stompers in the 1950s and ‘60s.
It’s about 360 miles to Dundee from here in the East Midlands and we decided to break our journey. So we rented a holiday cottage in Alnwick for the week preceeding the recording. At the end of a very pleasant stay in Alnwick (lovely town in lovely surroundings) we drove the last 120 miles to Dundee where the band made us very welcome. We had a quick look round Captain Scott’s ship Discovery, which was moored immediately outside the recording venue, and then spent a pleasant evening recording the band. All in all - a good trip.
At the end of October we spent two days in Bristol recording Dennis Armstrong’s Oliver Band - very convenient because Ann’s Mother lives on the edge of Bristol. So we stayed with her and it gave Ann some time with her Mum who is 89. Again the recording went extremely well on both days and I came home with nearly 31/2 hours of recorded material. There is a huge amount of work to do before the CD is complete but I was totally knocked out when I first played it back and made the rough-mix for Dennis to listen to. He was quite soon on the phone saying how good he thinks it is. I think this CD will be very special!
At Bude I recorded Derek Winters’ band Winter Sunshine. Derek liked it a lot when he heard the rough-mix CDs and at the moment the rest of the band (in various parts of Europe) are listening to their copies of the rough mix. I very much hope they all agree with Derek and me that they played some great N.O.-style jazz, and we can produce a CD from the session.
I have just recorded a live session of The Millennium Eagle Jazz Band and, all being well, a new CD will be released next year.
Because I have cut back my output of CDs I have not been actively seeking new recording work. As you can see from the list of bands above, at the rate of one new CD per month I have enough to last me until next Summer at least! There are two significant recordings booked however - in March I am booked to record Richard Leach in a band called Slide by Slide and in April I’ll be recording The Antique Six Jazzband.
So lots of good things to look forward to in 2009!
May I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and
Jazzy New Year.
